In 1947, there was another film, "Mahatma Udhangar" directed by G.
Pattu Iyer. D. K. Pattammal sang two songs in this film. " Kaana Aaval
Kondengumen Iru Vizhigal...’ (Ragam Mohanam), and " Kunchitha
Paadham, Ninainthu Urugum….’ (Ragam Kambodhi). The lyrics were by
Papanasam Brothers, Sivan and Rajagopala Iyer, and music by S. V.
Venkataraman and T. R. Ramanathan.
Pattammal also sang for an entertaining comedy in 1948, "Pizhaikkum
Vazhi" produced by the noted comedian, T. S. Durairaj who also played
the lead role. It was directed by A. Mitradas who directed Tamil and
Sinhala films for T. R. Sundaram and his Salem -based Modern Theaters.
Pattammal sang two songs written by Madurai G. Sundara Vaathiyaar and
composed by G. Aswathamma. One of them is worth mentioning. It
highlighted the Indian nation, her perennial rivers, culture, poets
and all. A sampler...
Engal Naattukku Endha Naadu Eeedu
Perinba Gnana Veedu
Gangai Yamunai Porunai Kaveriyum Paayum
Thellum Thamizh Vedam Tharum Valluvar Ennaadu
Allum Kavi Avvai Kamban Avatharitha Naadu
Saanthithanil Neenthum Vuyar Gandhi Innaadu
Therntha Veerar Nethajiyum Nehruvum Engal Naadu !
The song had a pleasing melody and Pattammal's facile singing added grace and polish to it.
Another film of significance but not popular, highlighting the Indian
Freedom Struggle was A. K. Chettiar's compilation movie on Mahatma
Gandhi. One of the earliest Indian globe -trotters Chettiar, a
Gandhian traveled to many countries collecting footage and also
shooting fresh scenes. Pattammal sang "Aadu Raattey.." Being a
documentary the film was not popular and did not get the attention
it richly deserved.
A forgotten film in which Pattammal sang was "Lavanya"(1951). The film
with T. E. Varadan, Kumari Vanaja, Kumari (no longer, 'Baby!')
Kamala, Suryaprabha and Pulimoottai Ramasami sank with no trace.
Pattammal sang songs in Tamil and Sanskrit in Chittoor V. Nagaiah's
Telugu film classic "Thyagaiah" and a few other forgotten films.
